Restored and reinstalled by
Carlo Scarpa
between
1958 and
1975, Castelvecchio
constitutes one of the principal examples of the Venetian architect’s
work in the museum sphere, along with the Gallerie dell’Accademia,
the Museo Correr and the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, the Gipsoteca
Canoviana in Possagno, and Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo.
The Museo di Castelvecchio is at the head of the network of
civic
monuments and museums in Verona instituted in the first half
of the nineteenth century. Important collections are on view, primarily
sculpture and painting from the twelfth to the eighteenth century.
With about 90,000 visitors each year, the Museum undertakes a rich program
of
conservation,
restoration, and
research,
as well as
didactic and
valorisation
programs. In addition it produces publications, exhibitions, and specialized
meetings.
It has a library, an archive, and a specialized photo archive accessible
to the public.
