Publication of the book, which is the first systematic, overall study of the architect’s archive, was supported by the Regione del Veneto in the context of the events promoted by the National Committee specially set up by the Ministry of Culture for the first centenary of Carlo Scarpa’s birth (Venice 1906 - Sendai 1978), and the Comune di Verona - Assessorato alla Cultura - Musei d’Arte e Monumenti.
The catalogue I disegni di Carlo Scarpa per Castelvecchio, by Alba Di Lieto, presents a new, in-depth reading of Scarpa’s work, examining the subject through different interpretations. The essays by Marisa Dalai Emiliani and Paola Marini, alongside the reproduction of an important essay by Licisco Magagnato of 1982, retrace the stages of this famous architectural restoration and museum layout with a historical approach. All 880 working drawings (back and front of 657 sheets) are reproduced, individually indexed and organised into ten topographical sections with introductions by Alba di Lieto. The drafting of this involved a complete review of the available documentation and a clear indication of the works carried out after that done by Carlo Scarpa, tracing new openings onto the study of one of the architect’s masterpieces.
The historical record proposed of the interpretation of the displays allows knowledge of this memorable design to be increased with previously unpublished aspects. It has until now been only partially considered and, moreover, no other publications on it are currently available.
So, thanks to the interest Carlo Scarpa’s work at Castelvecchio has always aroused in Italy and abroad, and not only in academic and professional circles, this book allows a gap in the specific publishing market to be filled and is a fine tribute to this great architect.
The catalogue, published by Marsilio, has 608 pages with 1000 colour illustrations and is the first volume of a series on the architect’s body of graphic work.
